What happens if the juice runs out?
At the moment, only the RAC can give EVs a roadside charge with their EV Boost solution. Using the recovery vehicle’s diesel engine they can give up to 7.5kW of charge - roughly 10 miles of driving from an hour’s charge at the roadside.
Most roadside recovery companies have to physically lift or worse drag the EV onto a flatbed truck, thanks to it being impossible to tow the cars owing to the motors being directly connected to the drivetrain.
Both can be dangerous as let’s face it, the battery won’t wait until the car is in a safe parking space. This can happen in lane 3 of a motorway or on a busy junction. Time is of the essence when it comes to roadside charging!
ZAPME to the rescue!
Offering a typical output of 50kW from an onboard battery (6 times the power of the RAC’s solution), the ZAPME charger can offer around 140 miles of charge in an hour. This is more than enough to get to a charging point even if many miles away.
For the most part ZAPME chargers will be plugged in just 10 minutes to allow the EV to make it to a charge point. In a dangerous position on the road this could reduce the risk of problems such as roadside technicians being hit by passing vehicles.
The ZAPME units are fitted with Type 2 CCS fast charging plugs, which are compatible with most major EV models on UK roads today.
Speaking of the ZAPME solution, James Foster, CEO of ZPN Energy says, “Thanks to ZAPME, EV roadside recovery faster than that of combustion engine vehicles that have run out of fuel. For the roadside rescue company, you can offer enough charge to get your client out of trouble in a matter of minutes.”
The ZAPME system can be plugged into the electricity grid to recharge or any roadside Rapid charger and as such is future-proofed against the petrol and diesel van ban coming in 2030.
The ZAPME solution can adapt to your company’s needs, from a small 10KWh workshop unit 22,50, 150 and 300KWh units that are vehicle mounted a solution is available for all eventualities.
James concludes, “Running out of juice is now only as stressful as running out of petrol in a combustion engine car. It is almost as quick to charge one up as putting a jerrycan of fuel in the tank but is certainly safer and more cost effective than lifting or dragging a vehicle onto a truck”
The nightmare of running out of juice is one fewer reason to worry about when going about your business in an electric vehicle. While not exactly stress free, with the ZAPME roadside charger it does mean that you don’t have to have your car carried away!”
